Overview
I started posting about books on TikTok in Summer of 2021, primarily about the marxist themes in the young adult fantasy novels Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, but kind of quickly pivoted to talking about romance genre fiction, which makes up the bread and butter of my leisure reading these days. I’ve been lucky to cultivate a really lovely, curious community over the last year through TikTok and, now, Instagram and Twitter.
In particular, I’m very interested in Karen Barad’s notion of “reading diffractively for patterns of difference.” Aspiring to read with care (which Barad characterizes as missing in much of critique) has shaped my approach to all of the genres I read but, in particular, my engagement with romance genre fiction. I think, because of this, I get told that I have a more “serious” sensibility online (which is totally fair!). Perhaps more accurately, I think the boundaries between my genre fiction reading and academic reading are porous, and interdisciplinarity serves me well.
